Design Brief

With the aim of transforming a retail location, this commercial renovation project on Queen Street, Auckland, saw the introduction of a self-supporting marble stair that would not only fulfil the practical needs of the space but also serve as a testament to the client's commitment to luxury and design excellence. With the project segmented into phases to minimise downtime in the busy store, the primary goal was to realise the sophisticated vision outlined in the renders created by the interior designer.

Our Process

Ackworth House's collaboration with the interior designer was instrumental in devising a construction methodology that could accommodate the ambitious design requirements without compromising on aesthetics. The challenge was to engineer a structure capable of supporting the considerable weight of the marble and the traffic of store customers, while maintaining a visually stunning appearance. Utilising steel plate stringers for structural integrity and plywood for shaping, the stair was meticulously clad in marble, achieving the desired elegance.

A significant hurdle was matching the balustrade's colour to resemble brass, accomplished by selecting a gold paint from Volvo’s car range of all places, further enhancing the stair’s luxurious appeal. Manufacture and installation were able to be highly efficient through detailed 3D modelling and shop drawings, allowing for offsite component fabrication and minimising onsite work, thereby reducing business interruption.

The Results

The Goldmark Queen Street staircase has emerged as a hallmark of luxury and design innovation, perfectly mirroring the client's original vision. The exquisite marble finish, coupled with the balustrade's brass-like appearance, not only elevates the aesthetics of the retail space but also accentuates the allure of the high-end jewellery on display. This project exemplifies the seamless integration of design and functionality, underscoring the successful collaboration between Ackworth House and our partners.
