Design Brief

The interior designer and homeowner approached Ackworth House to help with the design, manufacture and installation of the timber staircase and balustrade. The designer provided us with pictures and concept drawings of the stairs they wanted to achieve.

• Timber staircase made from Tasmanian Oak

• Solid balustrade in matching timber

• Incorporate handrail into top of balustrade

• Staircase landing to clear door underneath to outside

• Negative detail on side of stairs against wall with LED light feature

• Incorporate cupboards under stairs with flush doors to match balustrade

Our Process

The Ackworth House team met with interior designer at our showroom to discuss the requirements of the project.

We then came up with a proposed methodology to construct the staircase and balustrade to incorporate all the design features requested and to comply with the New Zealand building code and structural requirements. We also value engineered it to ensure the final design and methodology would fit the client’s budget without compromising the overall design. Part of this process involved sourcing timber for the stairs and a matching veneer for the balustrade.

The next step was to complete a PS1 for design to submit to council. From here a site measure was carried out to get all dimensions required for shop drawings. Detailed shop drawings were then done and sent to the client to approve before starting the manufacture. Along with this a small sample of the stair with the negative detail and LED light was made and provided to the client to approve.

Once shop drawings were approved, our team of qualified tradesmen carried out the manufacture and installation of the stairs and balustrade, including installing the matching doors on the cabinetry under the stairs.

Words from our client

Kyle and the team from Ackworth House were integral to our project, ensuring our vision for the stair was realised. The stair itself was complex with a recessed lighting system that required precision engineering to ensure it operated to perfection and achieved the high level outcome we desired, this required Ackworth to build a model which was highly effective in achieving our outcomes. Additionally, their experience and technical ability allowed us to design in seamless integrated ‘hidden’ storage below the stair and a minimal balustrade.
